POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORTS
Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS)
Positive Behaviour Support is a robust, evidence-based framework that promotes meaningful behaviour change through respectful, individualized, and collaborative practices. It is effective across a wide range of settings—from schools to disability services—and supports both behavioural improvement and enhanced quality of life.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centered, evidence-based framework designed to improve quality of life and reduce challenging behaviours by teaching new skills and modifying environments. It integrates principles from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), systems theory, and person-centered planning.

PBS is not a single intervention but a comprehensive approach that includes:
-
Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)
-
Skill-building and environmental adjustments
-
Collaborative planning with families, educators, and support teams
-
Respect for individual dignity and autonomy

PBS is characterized by:
-
Proactive strategies to prevent challenging behaviour
-
Teaching replacement skills that serve the same function as the problematic behaviour
-
Data-driven decision-making
-
Multi-tiered support systems (universal, targeted, and intensive)
-
Focus on valued outcomes, such as increased independence, social inclusion, and wellbeing

PBS operates within a three-tiered framework:
-
Tier 1: Universal supports for all individuals (e.g., clear expectations, positive reinforcement)
-
Tier 2: Targeted supports for individuals at risk (e.g., small group interventions, social skills training)
-
Tier 3: Intensive, individualized supports (e.g., behaviour support plans based on FBA)
