CHILD CENTERED PLAY THERAPY

Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT)

Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is a developmentally responsive, non-directive therapeutic approach designed for children aged 3 to 10 experiencing emotional, behavioural, social, or relational difficulties. CCPT emphasizes the healing power of the therapeutic relationship and the child’s innate capacity for growth.

Child-Centered Play Therapy is a well-established, evidence-supported intervention that empowers children to heal through play. Its emphasis on relationship, autonomy, and emotional expression makes it a powerful tool for clinicians working with children across a range of settings and challenges.

Key principles include:

  • Unconditional positive regard

  • Empathic understanding

  • Congruence (authenticity)

  • Respect for the child’s autonomy and self-direction

Play is used as the primary medium of communication, allowing children to express complex emotions and experiences symbolically and safely.

Therapeutic Process

In CCPT:

  • The therapist creates a safe, permissive environment using carefully selected toys and materials.

  • The child leads the session, choosing how and what to play.

  • The therapist reflects feelings, tracks behaviour, and maintains a consistent, accepting presence.

  • Sessions typically occur in a dedicated playroom and may include consultation with caregivers or educators.

Clinical Effectiveness
  • Behavioural Disorders: CCPT significantly reduces externalizing behaviours such as aggression, hyperactivity, and defiance.

  • Childhood Depression: CCPT improves mood and reduces depressive symptoms in children from marginalized backgrounds.

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): CCPT enhances empathy, self-regulation, and social competence while reducing behavioural problems in children exposed to trauma.

  • Academic Performance: Children receiving CCPT show improved school readiness and achievement.

  • Anxiety: CCPT provides a safe space for children to process fears and worries, leading to reduced anxiety symptoms.

Cultural and Developmental Responsiveness

CCPT is particularly effective for:

  • Children from diverse cultural backgrounds

  • Those with limited verbal communication

  • Children with neurodevelopmental differences, including Autism
